Hard to press Directional Pad and Buttons in PSP

Who experiencing pressing their directional pad and buttons really hard? Or the buttons acted strangely like if you press up, it goes down, or even you don't press anything, it goes up or down, or maybe left and right.

If you consult it to some of the PSP shops in your place like what I did after experiencing the problem, most of the time, they will say that, "we have to replace the rubber pad behind the buttons". And you know how much is the charge in replacing the rubber and installing it again? 800 pesos. That is only for the D-pad. It will also cost the same when you replace the rubber in the right buttons.

Hmmmm...maybe 800 pesos is not that big amount if you really want your psp to be function as new again. But what if that is not the real problem?

In my part, I decided to open my psp to take a look if the real problem is about the rubber pad. So i search how to open my psp on google, then i found out that its not that real hard to open your psp, all you need is a small philip screwdriver, to drive the screw of course and that's it, you can open your psp.

So I did open my psp with no sweat, then I saw the rubber buttons and i remove it. Then i see the real problem....

The only problem is the dust in the rubber pads of the button. So all i have to do is to clean it with cotton buds and some liquid, it can be water actually, but i use alcohol.

After i clean it, i put again all the parts of the psp back in to place, the buttons, d-pad, and the rubber pad, i also clean the side of the analog because its kind a dusty. Then i put all the screws back.

And when I turn on my psp and test the buttons, it really works now, it works like when i first had my psp.

SO THAT IS ONLY THE REAL PROBLEM.....The dust....So why I have to pay 800 pesos just to clean the rubber pad of my psp? So better check first your psp like what i did. But if the real problem is the rubber, maybe that is the right time to go to some psp shops to buy rubber pad, but if they charge you for installing it in a high price, maybe you can install it by yourself.

Shame on those people that is taking advantage of some person which only want is to play with their psp to the fullest. Like in the shop where i had my psp check. Screw those people.

Here are the steps in opening the faceplate of your psp for you to clean the rubber pads:

You will need: Philip screwdriver.

--remove all the screws at the back of the psp. (7 screws all in all, remember where the screw is place on psp)
See the image below:

The two screws are behind the warranty sticker of sony, it up to you to decide if you will remove it or not. If its out of warranty, I think it will be ok, else, if you have the warranty, better let the sony guys "fix" of shall I say "clean your psp".

Then remove the faceplate:

After that, you can remove tha rubber pad,d pad and circle buttons:

Then clean your rubber pads, but soft and slowly, you might tear the circle rubber on your rubber-pads, they are so thin, so better be careful.

And next, put all the parts again, the buttons, then the clean rubber pad. Be sure before putting back the faceplate, the main screen is clean with dust, else, clean it with some cloth, but not too hard.

Then put the faceplate with the buttons. Then the screw, the battery, and the cover.

Turn on your psp and see the difference before and after. But if it doesn't change, maybe the real problem is in the rubber pad, or the unit itself.

Note: Open your PSP at your own risk. Only mess with the buttons and not with the boards or circuit of the psp. Only the things which is on the faceplate.

Post comments if you have some problems of need help.
Hope it helps!!!

Brick PSP

When used in reference to electronics, "brick" describes a device that cannot function in any capacity (such as a device with damaged firmware). This usage derives from the fact that some electronic devices (and their detachable power supplies) are vaguely brick-shaped, and so those which do not function are as useful only as actual bricks. The term can also be used as a verb. For example, "I bricked my MP3 player when I tried to modify its firmware." In the strictest sense of the term, bricking must imply that software error has rendered the device completely unrecoverable without some hardware replacement. If a software or firmware change can be executed to fix the device, it's not a brick. Brick may also refer to a power brick which is used to describe some external mains AC to low voltage DC power converters commonly supplied with many consumer electronics devices. It is called a brick because even with a unit with an appealing design, an OEM power transformer is generally supplied, and has a much less pleasing design - it is usually the size and shape of a brick. When these devices plug directly into a wall outlet (without an additional cord), they are also commonly referred to as a wall wart. The term "brick" is also used to refer to a particularly large mobile phone, referring to the analogic 1980's cell phones such as the Motorola DynaTAC which were the size of a house brick

PlayStation Portable

The PlayStation Portable, a handheld game console by Sony, can become bricked and unable to restart completely. The main cause of this problem is the modification of the PSP. Software crackers have created a virus called Trojan.PSP Brick, which deletes the necessary files needed to restart the system. This has now been patched; by anti-virus companies and by upgrading the PSP System Software.

Another way in which a PSP may be bricked is during a firmware upgrade when its lithium-ion battery is not charged enough, its AC adapter is unplugged, or the device is accidentally powered off. It is paramount that the PSP has a constant battery life while being updated as the firmware is writing directly to the internal flash memory of the PSP. As it is overwriting previous firmware, the current firmware is incomplete and therefore cannot boot up. Some users have also experienced bricks when they removed their battery while running homebrews.

PlayStation Portables can be 'unbricked' by using a modified battery with the serial number 0xFFFFFFFF written to its EEPROM. Once modified, the PSP will boot from an IPL located on a memory stick rather than the NAND. In this way, a firmware or recovery application can be booted from the memory stick to restore the system.

There are also known cases of 'semi-bricks' where the PSP may function but hindered by abnormal activities (ex. screen not staying on).

I experience bricking my PSP once, that was when I'm tweaking the themes for my PSP. I download XMB themes to put in my psp, because having XMB themes in your psp is so cool because its no ordinary theme for your psp because it is really customize. Mine is like an apple OS like themes which has a dock menu at the bottom of the psp just like an Mac pc. But doing or putting XMB themes for your psp is not encourage especially if you are really into techie things like firmwares, because if you make a wrong move in tweaking the themes of your psp, it can be brick just like what happen to me. But for those who bricked there PSP, don't worry, brilliant people solve this problem. It can be fix by using Pandora Battery and Magic Stick. This things fixed my fully brick PSP.

What is PSP?

The PlayStation Portable (officially abbreviated PSP) is a handheld game console manufactured and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment. Development of the console was first announced during E3 2003, and it was unveiled on May 11, 2004 at a Sony press conference before E3 2004. The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004, in North America on March 24, 2005, and in the PAL region on September 1, 2005 The PlayStation Portable is the first handheld video game console to use an optical disc format, Universal Media Disc (UMD), as its primary storage medium. Other distinguishing features of the console include its large viewing screen, robust multi-media capabilities, and connectivity with the PlayStation 3, other PSPs, and the Internet. Despite the console's superior computing power and multimedia capabilities, sales have (with cyclical exceptions) lagged behind its main competitor, the Nintendo DS. Nevertheless, the console is "the most successful non-Nintendo handheld game system ever sold". After the release of a remodeled, slimmer, and lighter version of the PlayStation Portable, appropriately titled Slim and Lite, in early September 2007, sales quadrupled in the United Kingdom the following week and increased by nearly 200% in North America for the month of October. Playstation Portable (PSP) is a handheld device game console which is manufactured and sold by Sony Entertainment.
